There are significant differences between Genuine GM Parts and imitation or used salvaged parts. Genuine GM Parts meet stringent requirements for fit, contour, rust resistance, material composition and body integrity. Many imitation parts are not manufactured to GM specifications and standards. 4. Most body shops agree they'd rather use Genuine GM Parts. Asking the following questions will help ensure the quality of your vehicle repairs.
Bumpers: All of the OEM bumpers fit nicely on the consumer publication's two test cars, but none of the imitation parts did, even after a repair shop reworked them, as needed. When the publication tested their impact protection using one of their hydraulic "bashers," their standard test for new cars, the OEM bumpers suffered only minor damage. The imitation bumpers, however, performed very poorly. One imitation bumper shattered under the basher's impact causing nearly $1,800 in total damage; another gave way, leading to more than $1,300 in damage. Fenders: All fenders were initially evaluated without making the extensive modifications a repair shop might have to carry out. Five of six OEM fenders fit the publication's test cars well. However, only three of 12 CAPA fenders fit well. Even after modifications, the CAPA fenders did not fit as well as the OEM parts. When the publication checked the fenders' rust resistance, the OEM fenders showed only moderate white corrosion. (Less damaging than rust, white corrosion occurs when the protective zinc coating of galvanized steel oxidizes.) Two CAPA fenders, which didn't have the zinc coating, were put through the same test and showed heavy red rust. CAPA told the consumer publication it now requires all sheet-metal parts manufactured as of January 1, 1999, to be galvanized. The consumer publication supports CAPA's goals and the competition that imitation parts bring to the marketplace, but until the quality of these parts improves, consumers should: Haggle for OEM: Many consumers who request OEM parts after their insurers initially recommend imitations eventually get what they want with little or no hassle, according to a recent survey. |
