Second-Gen Performance Data Recorder to Debut on 2022 Blackwing

Taking your Cadillac to the track is about to get a whole lot more fun – and informative. General Motors has unveiled the second-generation Performance Data Recorder, set to make its Cadillac debut on the 2022 CT4-V Blackwing and CT5-V Blackwing.

The first-gen Performance Data Recorder has been available on select GM vehicles since the mid-2010s when it debuted on Chevrolet’s legendary Corvette. What exactly does this feature do? It’s meant to enhance your performance driving experience by recording video and measuring key statistics like speed, RPM, and even g-forces. This data can be viewed on top of the video, generating a professional quality recording of your day at the track.

Whether you want to show off your driving prowess to friends or just see where you can improve, the Performance Data Recorder is a great accessory for spirited driving. Developed by Cosworth, Performance Data Recorder also integrates with Cosworth Toolbox, a data tracing system that can provide a detailed breakdown of your steering, braking, and more.

How exactly does Performance Data Recorder work? It combines a mounted camera from the driver’s point-of-view with a dedicated microphone, self-contained telemetry recorder, GPS Receiver, and a SD card slot for video retrieval. “The Performance Data Recorder combines the ability to record and share drive videos with the power of a professional-level motorsports telemetry system,” explained Tadge Juechter, chief engineer of the Corvette.

So what has changed for the second generation? In these 2022 Blackwing performance sedans, you’ll have higher quality video, a new data overlay design, and your choice of several overlay modes including Sport, Track, Timing, and video-only. Like the first generation, Performance Data Recorder can determine your vehicle’s position on the track via cameras embedded in the vehicle and a GPS server. When you’re ready to see how you did on the track, you can watch the video directly on your infotainment screen or you can transfer it to another device via the aforementioned SD card slot.

A friendly reminder: the Performance Data Recorder is meant for closed-circuit track driving. We encourage you to drive responsibly and please follow all applicable speed limits and rules of the road. Ready to get behind the wheel of a vehicle with the Performance Data Recorder?
